A compact New England rambler is redesigned for a modern and more expansive layout that better accommodates a growing extended family. The client objectives were to recreate a home away from home for intergenerational vacations by the sea.
Due to strict zoning requirements, honoring the footprint of the existing building was a working design constraint to overcome while adding a second floor and improving the connection between interior and exterior for large gatherings during the warmer months.
“A simple salt box form is a classic New England style. We’ve dressed it up more by adding a secondary form, as well as punched glassy openings to the side and rear. ”

The existing tight footprint of the building was maintained, but the addition of a second floor created the need for a different treatment of the masses of the building. Using the steeper roof pitches of a salt box style created a more dynamic vertical element to the house.
-
Using two different contrasting materials (a light stone, and a darker painted board and batten) at the two main masses of the building helps to reduce the sense of increased height.

A special moment of a nana wall system creates the opportunity for the rear of the living room to open completely to the terraced patio for family gatherings al fresco.
